Shepherd Market is the heart of Mayfair. It was here in the 1680s that James II established a mayfair, from which the area took a name. The fair lasted for two weeks, and whilst its principal raison d'etre was cattle trading, 'wenching' as Davidson puts it was also an integral part of the entertainment. Over the years, the fair grew in popularity and size, attracting both rich and poor. Whilst Queen Anne tried to put an end to the fair, her successor George I was more approving. Interestingly, with parallels to Notting Hill, what killed the festival off was the gentrification of the area in the eighteenth century, and the building of grand houses. According to the BBC (2002) the new occupants 'took out the 18th Century equivalent of a noise abatement order and as of 1764 the May Fair ended and swanky Mayfair was born.'

There weren't a grand number of people visiting Arif the Saturday evening I was hanging around taking photographs. The shop specialises in Italian casual and formal wear. It looks like the kind of place which only needs one billionaire to visit a week for it to be profitable.

Up until the 1970s Mayfair was famous for its thriving sex industry based in Shepherd Market. Many of the brothels were based in properties owned by Harrow School, which Jim White points out, meant that the education of Winston Churchill, who attended Harrow, was based partly on the proceeds of the sex industry. White claims that in the seventies Shepherds Market was full of drinkers and streetwalkers all looking for a piece of the action. In the 1980s Shepherd Market was where Jeffrey Archer met the prostitute Monica Coghlan, an encounter which he tried to cover up in the court of law, and which eventually led to his imprisonment. By the 1990s, according to White, the brothels and streetwalkers had gone, replaced by restaurants, bars and a Mosque. However Max Davidson (1999) writing three years later recounted having lunch in Shepherd Market and seeing cards in doorways, and women showing their wares on the street.
